Thin Air

2022

The debut album from Summit of the Big Low emerged in March 2022 after years of careful cultivation in Toby Uffindell-Phillips' home studio in the Garden of England. Following positive feedback from BBC Introducing's Abbie McCarthy and Tom Robinson's Fresh On The Net for earlier demos, Toby brought in new and familiar faces to add guitar and harmony parts to his intimate acoustic songwriting.

The transformative decision came when Toby offered production duties to previous Sound Sanctuary collaborators Bombay Monkey. Their atmospheric electronic treatments aligned perfectly with his now mature songwriting style, allowing dreamy acoustic-folk to meet ambient electronica in a natural convergence of constituent parts.

Songs from the album were shared during the 2020-21 lockdowns, finding new audiences through the "Cabin Fever Sessions" online performances and select local festival appearances. The album was self-released with a limited edition vinyl pressing made possible by Sugarbush Records, establishing Summit of the Big Low's signature sound of layered harmonies, gentle rhythms, and warm, immersive soundscapes.

Summit of the Big Low

2023

The self-titled sophomore album from Summit of the Big Low arrives as a sonic meditation on global uncertainty and personal navigation through turbulent times. Released in February 2023, the record was influenced by recent world affairs—Brexit, the Trump era, epidemics, climate tipping points, and the threat of nuclear war—while chronicling the artist's own journey through them.

The album's cover art features a Yin-Yang symbol constructed from discarded cigarette butts, illustrated by Lucy Pook during lockdown. From a distance, it projects ideological harmony and balance; up close, it reveals the discarded objects of a darker human truth. This duality mirrors the album's exploration of beauty and ugliness, simplicity and chaos, despair and hope—the eternal ebb and flow between life's summits and big lows.

Entirely self-produced by Toby Uffindell-Phillips, who played and programmed all instrumentation, the album represents a creative evolution from band collaborator to solo studio architect. The record captures a world in flux while offering connection through shared uncertainty.
